04/24/2005: From the “In Case You Were Wondering Files”…
This article By Cinthia Ritchie (Anchorage Daily News) called Men bored out of their churches, author claims just might touch a nerve with this book:”…David Murrow, an Anchorage filmmaker, father and Presbyterian elder, suggests in his gutsy and thought-provoking "Why Men Hate Going to Church." Written in a jaunty, quick-moving style, the book chronicles the problem of men's dwindling church attendance and then, in true masculine spirit, offers up viable, challenging solutions.
Walk into any church and look around, Murrow says. You'll see women, children and a smattering of elderly parishioners. But where are the men?
"I'll tell you," Murrow said, his hands raised in the air like an exasperated disciple. "They're home watching the game. Or outdoors hunting or fishing. Or catching up on work."
They're not at church not because they don't want to be, Murrow contends, but because church has failed them. Instead of working hard to maintain close ties with the masculine, it has catered to the feminine. Services and Bible study classes have become too safe, too soft, too nurturing. Men don't want to sit around talking about feelings and relationships. They want to be assigned tasks and goals.
…
Church forces men to act like women, to be placid and calm and nice. They are supposed to adopt good listening skills and comfortably talk about relationships.
But, Murrow insists, men aren't wired that way. They thrive on active stimuli. They need challenge and risks and excitement. Which is why so many choose to stay home on Sundays and watch the football game instead.
"A lot of guys don't even realize that they're bored in church," Murrow said.”
*Whew* Well I’m glad I got that all explained to me. Just click on the link to read more of this "wisdom."
Now - What about those women driven out of church by those *boring* men??? Anybody want to write that book???
