04/21/2005: Because I've not done a blogmeme in a while.....
I'd meant to blog this after seeing Abby's profile, but it was Big Stupid Tommy posting his profile that reminded me that I'd left it undone:
Your Linguistic Profile: |
75% General American English |
15% Yankee |
5% Dixie |
5% Upper Midwestern |
0% Midwestern |
As an unregenerate non-Southerner, even though I live in Memphis, I'm glad to see that the South has only corrupted 5% of my language. And I'm sure that's only because I actually think that "y'all" does make a certain amount of linguistic sense; I think it's a shame that in standard English you can only distinguish between the second person singular and second person plural (i.e., "you" and "you" respectively for you non-grammarians) in context, so I tend to use "y'all" as my de facto second person plural. And that isn't completely an encroachment of Southernism into my speech, it's also a corruption of my habit of using "you all" in situations when I used the second person plural to address a group, a habit I acquired long before moving to Memphis.
