04/18/2005: Wow! It turns out there's a reason they called him Herr Panzerkardinal
According to reportage from the New York Post: Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (noted Papal candidate) was a member of Der Hitler Jugend and manned an anti-aircraft gun during the war. Ratzinger claims that he joined the Hitler Youth when it was compulsory, that he later deserted (I assume from the Wehrmacht, though it's possible that his service was in the Luftwaffe) after being drafted, and that other resistance was futile, though some in Germany dispute those claims.
