04/11/2005: Tax burdens by city
CNN/Money has an interesting table comparing the state and local tax burdens for 51 U.S. cities. (Table assumes a family of four, making $75K. I don't know how they figured the property tax by city, given real estate price variations, but the Memphis row seems to assume a house worth $136K.)
Memphis comes in at number 45. (The only cities on the list with lower tax burdens are Houston, Sioux Falls, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Anchorage, and Cheyenne.) With regard to other cities of interest to this blog, Chicago is number 13 on the list, and St. Louis is inexplicably missing.
