04/06/2005: Meanwhile, speaking of Slate....
their "Explainer" column from last Friday tackled one of The Fundamental Questions of the Universe: Why doesn't baseball have cheerleaders? (short form answer: some teams do indeed have cheerleaders (Toronto, Florida and San Diego apparently have active "dance squads", while Anaheim and the-team-now-known-as-the-Nationals-since-moving-from-Montreal experimented with cheerleaders but have since abandoned the experiments), but fan reaction has been mixed).
Actually, I am all too painfully aware that there are cheerleaders in baseball, at least at the AAA level, since The Memphis Redbirds Redhots have been doing their best to ruin my appreciation of the high minors since 2001 (when I moved to Memphis and began attending Redbirds games). As far as I'm concerned, if someone drove the Redhots to Any Other City With A Minor League Franchise, that'd be just fine by me, but mine appears to be a minority opinion.
