04/04/2005: Interesting Proposal...
Found this most Interesting Suggestion over on US News Wire."Throw Away The Key, a national advocacy group that works on behalf of past and future victims of crime, today called for the mass release of all criminals currently serving time for committing or threatening violence against our nation's state lawmakers and judges. Instead of incarceration, the group has proposed a Megan's Law style community notification program to alert officials that criminals who target them are living in the area.
"We think state lawmakers and judges deserve the same level of protection currently provided to America's women and children, who are targeted by rapists and child molesters," said Michael Paranzino, president of Throw Away The Key. "Why shouldn't the men who write our laws and sentence our criminals enjoy the same community notification that we are told makes women and children safe?"
The average time served in state prison by a rapist before his release is just 6 years. The average time served by men who sexually abuse children is just 3 years. There are more than a quarter of a million previously convicted sex offenders living freely in communities across America. These sexual predators must self-report their name and address to the police, which, we are told, makes women and children safe. People who threaten or harm lawmakers are usually incarcerated for long periods of time.
"Call me a fool, but if community notification is good enough for Carlie Brucia, Jessica Lunsford, and the more than 100,000 women who are raped every year, by golly it should be good enough for the men who write the lax laws and those who leniently sentence our criminals."
