04/01/2005: From the "Interesting Historical Oddities" Department:
Otto von Bismarck, prime minister of Prussia, first Chancellor of Germany, and the founder of the German Empire, was born on April Fool's Day, 1815. And pretty soon, some wingnut out in the blogosphere will no doubt denounce him as "a stinking liberal", for this famous arch-conservative was the first head of state to impliment a comprehensive social-security system. Via the Quote of the Day newsletter, a sampling of the wit and wisdom of Otto von Bismarck:
To retain respect for sausages and laws, one must not watch them in the making.I find the last quote especially apt, in light of the fact that the United States is now led by an idiot drunkard child....
Never believe anything in politics until it has been officially denied.
When you say you agree to a thing in principle you mean that you have not the slightest intention of carrying it out in practice.
When you want to fool the world, tell the truth.
I have seen three emperors in their nakedness, and the sight was not inspiring.
There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children, and the United States of America.
