03/29/2005: Great days in Memphis Music History:
According to my sources, today is the 29th anniversary of the day that Bruce Springsteen jumped the fence at Graceland. According to the story, Springsteen had just played Memphis on his Born To Run tour, and winding down after the concert, he hired a cab to take him to "where Elvis lives". The cabbie did, driving him up to the famous "music gates":
Supposedly, Springsteen saw a light on in the mansion, and came to the conclusion that Elvis must be sitting up reading. After coming to that conclusion, he was emboldened to jump the fence surrounding the mansion and go up to the door, knock, and hopefully be greeted by Elvis.
Unfortunately for Bruce's fantasy, Elvis was in Lake Tahoe at the time; all he received for his trouble was being escorted (politely, he always insisted) off the premises.
