02/03/2005: Memphis news - the week in review
Jan. 28 - Mayor Herenton confirms that he is the father of a four-month-old boy from a past relationship.
Jan. 30 - Two films made in Memphis win awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Hustle and Flow, directed by Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer, won the Audience Award in drama, and Forty Shades of Blue, also filmed in Memphis, won the Grand Jury Prize. A great quote from Brewer: "I'm calling it 'Lawler's Revenge.' Remember when Andy Kaufman used to fight Jerry Lawler? Kaufman would always say, 'I'm from HOLLYWOOD!' Well, guess what? We're from MEMPHIS!"
Groups of parents from five Memphis city schools slated for closing by Superintendant Carol Johnson are mobilizing in opposition to the closings.
Feb. 1 - Memphis landlords are unhappy about a proposed city ordinance that would hold them responsible for the cost of hauling away items left behind after an eviction.
