01/31/2005: Color photos of Tsarist Russia
The Library of Congress is hosting an exhibition of the photography
of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944).
Many of the pictures are online, such as this beautiful picture of the Nilova
monastery on Stolobnyi Island in Lake Seliger, northwest of Moscow, photographed
in 1910.

I've seen these. They are beautiful indeed. What's spooky is seeing some of the rural pictures. Taken one hundred years ago, they are images (in color!) of lives lived in ways unchanged since maybe the 1600 or 1700's! It's almost like a time machine.
