01/27/2005: Senate confirms more "Murdering Officers"
The Senate confirmation (as expected…*sigh*) of Dr. Rice brings to mind the PBS show "Sharpe's Rifles" (an adaptation of the novels by Bernard Cornwell starring Sean Bean.) There is a part where Sergeant Harper tells Lieutenant Sharpe he'll make a good "Killing officer." When Sharpe doesn't understand, Harper explains:
"Oh…now that’s too bad, Sir…I thought you’d ‘ave known, coming up yerself from the ranks as ye did…there are only two kinds of officers; Killing Officers and Muuurdering Officers. Killing Officers are poor old buggers that git you killed by accident. Muuurdering Officers are mad, bad old buggers that git you killed on purpose, for a reason…for a country or a religion….maybe even for a flag. They're mean, murdering old buggers."
Bush is the perfect "Murdering Officer" himself as our Commander in Chief, and is succeeding in promoting more "Murdering Officers" for this new term to fill out his Cabinet. Should be interesting for four more years.

Alright! Another Sharpe fan! I'm guessing you're not a Memphian, but a local video store has the entire series for rent on DVD and it's well worth looking for. (Video and More on Poplar, across from East High) Rousing stuff.
I'm slowly working my way through the novels and so far I enjoy them more than the similar Pat O'Brian novels about Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. More melodramatic, but easier reading.

Dear Mike:
Yep...we're hopelessly hooked on PBS stuff...it's funny how they can take an hour show and make you feel all the nuance of life with just a few looks, whereas Big Network crap can take that same hour and brow-beat your mind senseless with drivel, bad acting and inane dialogue. My copies of Sharpe I taped during the showings (and some of my stuff had pretty bad pre-cable/sat TV static...but I love my video archive any way!)
