Dark Bilious Vapors

But how could I deny that I possess these hands and this body, and withal escape being classed with persons in a state of insanity, whose brains are so disordered and clouded by dark bilious vapors....

01/25/2005: "Criminals are stupid; that's why they get caught." --Jon Waltz, Professor of Law, Northwestern University, August, 1979

This strikes me as the second most stupid way that a criminal has gotten himself caught:

New Castle County [Delaware] police say that after two men robbed the woman, one of them called the victim on his cell phone to apologize -- and to ask her out on a date.

The victim, 18, declined the request. Instead, she gave the cell phone number to police, who arrested Brent Brown, 25, on Thursday. Through a photo lineup, the victim also identified Brown as one of the robbers.
The most stupid way that a criminal has gotten himself caught (that I've heard of) was, interestingly enough, a similar appeal to male ego. It may not be true; I didn't witness any of the trial or handle the case personally, but it was legendary in the public defender's office in St. Louis when I was an assistant public defender there. It was a forcible rape case. The vicitim, showing incredible presence of mind in the face of the trauma she'd just been through, told her attacker that he was the best lay she'd ever had, and if he'd give her his name, address and phone number, she'd be getting back together with him for more, real soon.

He took the bait. Hook, line, and sinker. Needless to say, someone came calling real soon. If you think it was the rape victim.... well, think it over some more. I'll wait.
