01/21/2005: Another reason (as if you need one) to nuke Redmond, WA
According to a post in today's Lockergnome Linux Fanatics Newsletter, the web based version of the TurboTax tax preparation software doesn't work with Linux browsers (sorta, keep reading), but does work with Windows browsers.
WTF??? I hear someone saying. But yes, according to NetWizard's Blog, TurboTax on the Web uses a JavaScript file to check browser versions, and in said file there is this line:
// Unix/Linux browsers are not supported. You can scope it here if you don't believe me.
If you're a Linux user and, in spite of this insult still want to give your business to TurboTax (hey, on November 2 a good many of us voted against our true economic interests, so obviously self-destructive behavior is A Great American Tradition :-) ), NetWizard gives instructions for a workaround above. Basically, it involves installing Firefox for Linux (and if you haven't, why haven't you?), downloading the Firefox User Agent Switcher extension, and getting your copy of Firefox to tell the TurboTax website that it's Firefox for WinXP (or Win2K, or any other supported Windows version--apparently that means anything but Win95 or WinNT).
Frankly, I'd just as soon look for a more Linux friendly online tax site, myself.
