01/19/2005: Lisa Simpson speaks Cornish?
While reading this BBC story on dying languages, I ran across this bit about my favorite Simpson.
Most attempts to revive threatened languages flounder, but they can succeed - particularly if they become a part of popular culture.
Think Lisa Simpson and her recent flag-waving on behalf of Cornish and the teaching of Manx in Isle of Man schools.
Now I'm a big Simpsons fan, and I was pretty sure I'd seen every episode, but I don't recall seeing this.
A bit of Googling turned up this article in The Economist and this page at Warlinnen - The Cornish Language Online.
On Christmas Day one of the modern world's best-known fictional characters, Lisa Simpson, will add her support, shouting “Rydhsys rag Kernow lemmyn!” (Freedom for Cornwall now!) in a special Britain-only edition of the American cartoon series.
Apparently there was a British Simpsons Christmas Special that we didn't get to see on this side of the Atlantic. D'oh!
UPDATE: You can view the 2004 British Christmas Message from the Simpsons here.
