01/02/2005: Permanent detention without due process a "bad idea"
Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana has said that a proposed plan to keep some of the Guantanamo detainees permanantly detained, even if the government lacks evidence to charge them in courts, is "a bad idea."
That's an understatement. How about "a travesty of justice"?
Senator Carl Levin of Michigan added "There must be some modicum, some semblance of due process ... if you're going to detain people, whether it's for life or whether it's for years."
Just a "semblance" of due process? How about the real thing?
The Bush administration is making a mockery of everything this nation is supposed to stand for.
