12/14/2004: Renteria Watch...
The Cardinals Birdhouse mentions that Pedro Martinez has apparently signed with the New York Mets for a deal involving multiple barrels of money (seriously embarassing Ray Mileur, who's said for a long while now that Pedro would stay in Boston). And that means that the BoSox have the financial wherewithal to meet Edgar's contractual demands. Not to mention that apparently Detroit and Seattle are also interested in acquiring his services.
Things don't look good for keeping Edgar in Paradise on the Mississippi.

What on earth does a team coming off a 90 loss season want with a 33 year old headcase with a recent history of arm problems?
This is 7/31/04 all over again. My favorite part of the espn.com article was that the Mets asked the Yankees if they should offer the extra money/4th year. I wonder if they stifled a laugh when they told the Mets to go for it.
The Mets are absolutely killing me. At least I won't waste $170 on the MLB package on cable in 2005.

What I've seen of the whole free agent market has shown no evidence of being driven by reason this off-season. The market for free agent shortstops (Vizquel, 3 years/$12.5 mil? Guzman, 4 years/$16.8 mil?) was the first hint of it for me, but because of Renteria I've had my eye on the shortstop market so far.
