11/30/2004: Meanwhile... another era ends....
Dan at Get Up, Baby! tells us that the age of true Astroturf is dead:
It's true. The Toronto Blue Jays bought SKYDOME for $21 million Canadian dollars today, becoming the last team to control its own ballpark. I wish they'd have told me about the price, I think I could have come up with fifty bucks somehow.Alas, poor Astroturf... I knew him, Horatio....
The bad news about all this is that they're getting rid of theRadical 80'svintage astroturf that SKYDOME has brought into the 21st century, replacing it with this annoying field turf stuff that actually looks and feels like grass. Worst of all, it actually plays like grass. That's right... say goodbye to Astrobounces, Vince Coleman taking advantage of the speed bump you get on turf (and Vince Coleman getting crushed by an automated tarp), and the Astroturf Baseball of the 1980's. An entire generation of sportswriters disillusioned by "THE DH KILLED BASEBALL!" rants could sleep well at night knowing that they'd have astroturf to kick around in the morning, but no more.
