Ray Mileur at The Cardinals Birdhouse is reporting that the Cardinals have made an offer for Arizona Diamondbacks LHP Randy Johnson. The catch? Look at the trade bait being offered:
According to sources close to the St. Louis Cardinals, an offer has been made to Arizona for Randy Johnson. This was being discussed on Random Redbird Reasoning yesterday, and the general consensus of the commenters there was that Jocketty knows better than that, and giving up a large chunk of the Cardinals pitching future would be way overpaying for Johnson (the final commenter, posting yesterday afternoon, funnels reports from the Post-Dispatch message boards that Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty, in a radio interview yesterday afternoon, denied the rumors as being totally specious). Mileur probably has the best take on the situation:
New York's Newsday reports that the Yankees have intensified their bid to sign lefthander Randy Johnson, with their main competition coming from the Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox.
According to Newsday, the Cardinals have proposed a three-pitcher package in exchange for Johnson: righthanders Dan Haren and Kiko Calero and lefthander Rick Ankiel.
[Yankees general manager Brian] Cashman's job is on the line if he doesn't get Johnson.Keep an eye on the situation; it could get interesting.
Johnson has indicated in the past the Yankees were his first choice if traded, I believe that to still be true. It's highly unlikely that the Cardinals will win this war against the Yankees.
