In the midst of all this public bickering, "Let it Rot" was released as a film, an album, and a lawsuit. In 1970, Dirk sued Stig, Nasty, and Barry; Barry sued Dirk, Nasty, and Stig; Nasty sued Barry, Dirk, and Stig; and Stig sued himself accidentally. It was the beginning of a golden era for lawyers, but for the Rutles, live on a London rooftop, it was the beginning of the end.

Midtown Video has a copy for rent. It's still a very funny movie, but its connections to early Saturday Night Live really stick out now. And the songs are still gems all by themselves. "I feel good; I feel bad; I feel happy; I feel sad. Am I in love? Ahhhh-ah, I must be in love." Sublime. Neil Innes was a genius.

Rent it? I own it. Hence the quote....

The impressive thing, to me, is that the Rutles songs are very obviously based on the Beatles work without being merely parody lyrics set to Beatles tunes, which would have been the easy way out.
