11/13/2004: I really hope to God they're not serious....
Checking a Yahoo! Mail account I keep for mailing list subscriptions and "spam-catcher" purposes, I noted that the ad at the top of the page is a "tie-in" ad linking both Yahoo's instant messaging service and the NBC TV reality show "The Apprentice" (source of the new catchphrase, introduced by The Donald: "You're fired!"). In the ad for Yahoo! Messenger, the ad copy says "Fire someone right now. Waiting will only make it more difficult. Use Yahoo! Messenger to tell someone, 'You're fired!'"
You may decide to react differently, but if I had a boss who was so spineless that he had to fire me via an IM, I think I'd return the courtesy via automatic weapons fire. I'm not sure that any jury in the U.S. would convict me, either.
That one really is begging to be enshrined in the Museum of Really Bad Ad Copy.
