11/01/2004: Oh wow....
Over at The Current Electoral Vote Predictor 2004, the mystery webmaster of that site, "The Votemaster", has finally revealed his identity. He is Andrew S. Tannenbaum, an expatriate American who is a professor of computer science at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. If, like me, you are a Linux geek wannabe (or even better, a true Linux geek), you know Professor Tannenbaum can be thought of as the Grandfather of Linux: he developed Minix as a bare bones operating system to be used in computer science coursework in operating systems. Linus Torvalds originally used Minix as the starting point for what became Linux. Or to let Linus himself tell the tale:
Linux has some ties the the minix community: I originally used minix for linux developement, and the standard filesystem is still mostly compatible with the original minix fs (ie you can mount the same partitions both from minix and linux). That's about the only thing minix/linux have in common any more, but it may make a transition easier.Don't know about you, but this is a distinct "Small world, ain't it?" moment for me....
