10/26/2004: Is Cardinal Nation getting desperate?
From a comment at Redbird Nation:
The World Series edition Redbird milk cartons at Dierbergs are back on sale.Actually, while it would be cruel to do this to a Cardinals team that won a buttload more games, and went way farther, than anyone (except Ray Mileur) thought they could this season, I'd kinda like to see a collection of milk cartons like the ones described. Or at least maybe some photoshopped pictures of them?
You can choose the missing Jedmonds, Rolen, Sanders, and all of the pitching staff except for Haren and King. Hurry, supplies are limited.
In a sense it appeals to me for the "ha ha only serious" nature of the joke; while teasing, it is true that our current World Series woes have to do with the fact that baseball performance tends to be streaky, and it's been the Cardinals bad luck that something like half their offensive power (Edmonds and Rolen; really more like 2/3 of our offense if you don't ignore some of the lesser lights like Sanders and Womack), the starters and the bullpen have all decided to slump (ok, "regress to the mean" if you prefer) just now.
Still, I'm guardedly optimistic. While I'm too cynical not to be expecting the worst and hoping for a pleasant surprise, I really don't think that the Cardinals are going to drop two games at Busch Stadium. Not in front of the St. Louis fans.
Then again, the conventional wisdom was saying that there was no way in hell that the Yankees were going to drop four games straight (two of them in the Bronx) to lose the ALCS, either.
In the immortal word of Joaquin Andujar: "Youneverknow."
