10/15/2004: Further evidence of the decline of cultural awareness in the United States....
and I'm shocked--deeply shocked--that it's Roger Ebert who's letting me down. This from his review of Team America: World Police:
Their strategy extends even to their decision to use puppets for all of their characters, a choice that will not be univerally applauded. Their characters, one-third lifesize, are clearly artificial, and yet there's something going on around the mouths and lips that looks halfway real, as if they were inhabited by the big faces with moving mouths from the Conan O'Brien show.Faces with moving mouths.... does nobody in this fading republic remember Clutch Cargo and "Syncro-Vox" anymore?
[The thought occurs to me that Roger does indeed still remember Clutch Cargo--for Gawd's sake, how can he not? Even I remember Clutch Cargo and I'm a bit younger than Rog--but of course, he can't count on very many of his audience getting the reference, hence the Conan O'Brian reference, which is more likely to resonate with the GenX-ers. I'll go with that. Having to revise my opinion of Ebert is more than I want to tackle today.]
