10/14/2004: Well, St. Louis fans are just, uh, enthusiastic
I think they showed this guy (scroll down to the bottom of the story) on the pregame segment of the Fox broadcast of the game last night:
So supported by strong flanks and crafty veterans, the only thing missing from the Cardinals troops was the gung-ho, caution-to-the-wind kind of guy. Enter Tim Walter of Florissant.
Walter easily took the medal for uniform creativity. Of course, he had the standard dress: Albert Pujols jersey, red undershirt, blue shorts with red and white stripes, red and white socks to accent his red and white Nikes and more than enough red and white Mardi Gras beads to string a Christmas tree.
But the helmet set it all off. The plastic helmet was easily three feet from the front of the bill to the back. Walter filled the inside with foam-rubber lining so he could actually wear it. Then he glued 15 separate doodads to it, including action figures of Pujols, Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen.
Walter, 38, said he worked on the creation for about six hours.
"My wife came out to the workroom while I was making it," Walter said. And what kind of reaction did Walter get from the love of his life?
"She said, 'You're a freak' and went back into the house."
Walter, ever faithful to the cause, seemed to take it all in stride. "I'm not a freak, just a fan."
