09/23/2004: Just goes to show you...
sports fans will pretty well go for anything if you can turn it into a competition. And so far, this sport has Corporate Sponsorship (from Chivas Regal, no less); I'm wondering when Anheuser Busch will pick up some of the sponsorship tab and then it's a short trek to this sport replacing the ceaseless rebroadcasts of "The World Series of Poker" on ESPN.
And which sport is that? Elephant Polo.
I am not making this up.
And how did elephant polo come into existence, I hear you ask? Surely, the origin is pretty blindingly obvious. From Cynthia Barnes's very entertaining profile in Slate last Monday:
Like most mad schemes, elephant polo originated over too many drinks. "I was in St. Moritz with Jim Edwards," recounts James Manclark. "And he had elephants in Nepal. One thing led to another."
