Bush wins the presidency with 282 electoral votes. Kerry places second with 256 electoral votes.
Kerry wins the popular vote with 54,621,916 votes (48.94%). Bush places second with 54,510,906 votes (48.84%).

I'm forgetting who, but someone (Tim Noah at Slate, I think; he's done a series of "America's Worst College" columns arguing for abolition of the Electoral College) voiced the exact same sentiment. His reasoning was that this would light the fire under a bipartisan effort to abolish the Electoral College.
