09/21/2004: Fun with statistics....
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning:
The Redbirds got to Monday with 43 come-from-behind wins, 12 shutout wins, 18 wins in their final at-bat and 20 wins when tied or trailing after seven innings. That's the way to win pennants.
And dammit, I wish they'd have shown this in the TV broadcast yesterday:
True, the Cardinals have lost seven of their past 13 games. However, Monday's closest brush with catastrophe came when La Russa was nearly trampled by Bratwurst during the seventh-inning stretch Sausage Race. La Russa had just notified plate umpire Joe West of lineup changes when he returned, head bowed, to the third-base dugout. Bratwurst, the runaway leader in the race, charged past as La Russa looked up and avoided a collision at the last moment.
