09/12/2004: From the way too much time on their hands department....
From the Guinness Book of World Records mail list, we're told today that the record for putting the most layers of paint on a baseball is held by Michael and Glenda Carmichael of Alexandria, Indiana, USA, who have apparently been putting two coats of paint per day on a baseball since 1977. As of June, 2004 the ball measured 9' 1" in circumference. A core sample 14" long has been taken from the ball, and from that sample the specialist examining it has estimated that there are approximately 17, 994 layers of paint of the ball.
Which suggests the question.... WHY?????
From the same email we learn that 2005 is apparently the 50th anniversary of the first publication of the Guinness Book, and that for this milestone they're publishing a special anniversary edtion. I've always liked to have a fairly recent copy of the Guinness Book around; it's great browsing for those times (say, sitting in the bathroom) when you need to occupy your mind for a few minutes. I may need to check this one out.
