09/08/2004: Magic Number Watch:
8
A bit early, but the Cards played this afternoon and the Cubs-Expos game is over, so why wait?
It now becomes a three team watch. The Cubs lost to Montreal, while Houston beat Cincinnati. That means that Houston (once thought pretty much out of it) has ridden an amazing 12 game winning streak to pull a half game ahead of the Cubs (and taking a half game lead over the Cubs in the NL wild card race). So now, we'll have to keep an eye on the 'stros too.
And the Cardinals? I was afraid you were going to ask. They dropped the series with San Diego, losing 10-5 this afternoon. And because Chicago has missed three games with Florida because of Hurricane Frances, we have an interesting situation where Chicago is in third place in the NL Central standings, but their elimination number is still a game higher than Houston's.
