08/26/2004: Dubious achievements department:
The Arizona Diamondbacks are the first team in either league to be "mathematically eliminated"--i.e., there is no possible chance of their making the postseason.
Are congratulations in order?
(I'll note that with only a mere 39 wins as of yesterday, it's still not mathematically impossible for them to lose 100 games this season.)

Ha. I knew the Big Unit turned down those trades for a good reason.

Funny you should mention Johnson. I read on some baseball blog that Johnson's name appeared on the MLB waiver wire a few days ago. That would appear to be the prelude to some trade (now that the deadline's passed trades have to clear waivers), but I've seen no news that he was dealt.
Most likely, there was a proposed trade (Steinbrenner seems the likeliest suspect to me), but some team claimed Johnson off the waiver wire, whereupon Johnson's no-trade clause kicks in and thwarts the deal.

Sez yes, Johnson was on the waiver wire, and according to the rumor some team in the NL claimed him.
