08/19/2004: Um, Brian, you missed a little something here....
Over at Redbird Nation, Brian Gunn gives us a fascinating list of his pet peeves from baseball broadcasters. Seems to me Brian's bending over backwards to be fair, though....
To be fair, I can empathize with the difficulty of filling up an entire telecast with interesting things to say. I mean, imagine if you had to improvise for three hours straight, and someone was there to record everything you said. No doubt you'd say a lot of stuff that was just plain boring, or self-evident, or cliche. Hell, just last week Mike Shannon let author (and Cardinals fan) John Grisham take a turn behind the mike and do some play-by-play. He could not have come across as a bigger hack -- banalities and non-sequitors, one after the other. And mind you, this is a man who uses words for a living.Um, Brian, Grisham may use words for a living, but the fact of the matter is that he is a hack. Granted, a very successful one, but then again, to paraphrase Mencken, nobody went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.
Is it obvious I'm not a Grisham fan?
It's not as if the Cardinals care, but it's a good thing that I'm a St. Louis native; if the Cardinals Religion weren't encoded into my very DNA the fact that Grisham's a Cards fan might have me reconsidering whether it'd be good to support another team.
Oh well, even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while.
