08/18/2004: It's that time of year again...
when baseball fans start paying attention to The Magic Number.
Today, the Magic Number for the Cardinals is 30.
[If you're not playing the home game, the "magic number" is the number of games that a first place team needs to win their division, assuming that the second place team wins all of its games. So basically, if the Cubs play 1.000 ball from here on out, the Cardinals will still win the NL Central if they win at least 30 games. The Cardinals' magic number will go down by one for every game that the Cards win, and it will also go down by one for every game the Cubs lose. For a more detailed explanation, and a formula for calculating the magic number, see this page.]
