07/19/2004: More baseblogging....
Just a note that Dan over at Get Up, Baby! brightened my morning considerably with this note:
With Cal Eldred's lights out June and decent July, every active Cardinal that is not a 35 year old Japanese outfielder is above replacement level, according to Baseball Prospectus. (Bo Hart, Cody McKay, Jason Simontacchi, Mike Lincoln and Dan Haren are below both replacement level and the major leagues.)For those of you who don't play the home game that often: "LOOGY" = "Left-handed One Out GuY". Specialized short outing left-handed reliever, in other words.
In 2003, Kerry Robinson, Chris Widger, Wilson Delgado, Eli Marrero, Joe Girardi, Simontacchi, Jeff Fassero, Esteban Yan, Russ Springer, Lance Painter, Jimmy Journell, Pedro Borbon, Gabe Molina and Jason Pearson were all below replacement level. The pitchers combined for -29.3 VORP (LOOGYs Borbon and Pearson led the way with a whopping -12.9 between them), the position players -20.5, led by Wilson Delgado's -6.5, tied with Pedro Borbon for the overall lead. That's 4.5-5 wins lost by the Revolving Relievers and the Broken Bench, and five wins gained by putting easily acquired decent players at the end of the bench and the back of the bullpen.
