07/15/2004: WTF?????
This from Cardinal Nation:
Randy Johnson has agreed to waive his no trade clause for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals are looking for a 3rd team to complete the deal, sending Matt Morris to either Minnesota or New York, while prospects would go to Arizona.I have to admit that, after hearing reports that Johnson would waive his no trade clause to be traded to a contender, I played in my mind with the idea that he could go to the Cards; after all, they are certainly contending. I then figured out that it wasn't a real option; certainly the economics of the situation dictate that The Big Unit would be headed to the AL East (probably to The Hated Yankees, but you never could tell what the Red Sox might do to screw up that scenario). I'm still not certain that this is going to pan out.
UPDATE: Here's some news that might reassure Gooseneck; this is from Lee Sinins's daily transactions email newsletter:
Diamondbacks P Randy Johnson says he's open to the idea of accepting a trade. According to the Boston Herald, the Diamondbacks have been speaking to the Yankees, Angels, Cubs, Redsox and Whitesox about Johnson. My turn to voice a wish that a trade of the Unit to the Cubs doesn't pan out. For what it's worth, I'm still betting on either the Yankees or the Red Sox, though the first Johnson trade rumors I'd heard were to the effect that the Diamondbacks' GM was leaning towards a trade to the Angels (for some unexplained reason).
There's been a rumor that the Redsox are considering trading SS Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs for prospects, who would then be used as part of a package for Johnson. But, several papers have subsequently reported nothing will happen on that front any time soon, if at all. [my emphasis --LRC]

I really hope that this doesn't pan out.
