07/06/2004: Redbird wrapup....
I was at the game tonight. I don't have the time nor inclination to do a batter by batter summary like last week, but a few observations.....
Kind of a fugly win there. The good guys took the lead in the bottom of the second, only to have Nashville tie it in the top of the third when Dan Haren (who, it seemed to me, pitched a solid 4 innings before starting to run out of gas in the top of the fifth) gave up a solo homer to the goddam pitcher!!!! Ok... I'm over it now, especially when Danny redeemed himself by tagging his opposite number for a two run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, Dan ran out of gas in the 6th, when Nashville scored 3 runs on three walks (one intentional, when Haren got too far behind in the count) and two singles. That put Nashville up by a run, but we managed to tie in our half of the inning when Scott Seabol hit a leadoff home run on an 0-1 count. We managed to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on (my call here--the official scorer scored them a hit and fielding error respectively) two errors by the third baseman--a throwing error that let Mike Mahoney reach first and which allowed Scott Seabol (who singled as the second batter up in the inning) to score the winning run, and then a fielding error that allowed Brad Cresse (pinch hitting for reliever Randy Flores, who got the win) to reach first. Al Reyes came in in the top of the 9th to get the save, but not before allowing a single and scaring me several times going deep into the count. Al, a word of advice: you can't strike them all out all the time; that's why the rules give you 7 men in the field behind you. Use 'em.
It was "Millington Community Day" at the ballpark tonight, and I got to take a short stroll down memory lane, as there was a significant Navy presence (owing to the Naval Support Activity, Mid-South still being located in Millington). Had the CO of NSA in line behind me waiting to go in, and at the risk of sounding crass she's not a bad looking babe in uniform, at least not for a woman in her early to mid-40's (she also threw out one of the three ceremonial first pitches). Also had a Navy color guard and the NSA Navy Band playing the national anthem (The Good News: nobody singing it, praise what powers that be). However, the muses paid us back during the seventh inning stretch, when actress Jane Seymour sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" for us. The Good News: she's as much a babe in person, even several hundred feet away, as she is on screen. The Bad News: let's just say that a singing career is very justly eluding her; were I her agent I'd advise her not to give up her day job.
Interesting: I thought that Seymore was in town acting in the Johnny Cash biopic (or so I've heard) that's filming here and tying up a whole buttload of parking at the Scottish Rite Cathedral just across Union from UTHSC (thankfully, I don't have to park there, but I'll wager a whole bunch of my co-workers are significantly put out this week), but her IMDB filmography says nothing to indicate that's the case (she's got two movies in production right now, but neither has anything to do, near as I can tell, with either Memphis or Johnny Cash). Ah, mystery.....
