Current front runner for "weirdest headline I've read today": Lake vanishes in suburban St. Louis
WILDWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- A lake in this St. Louis suburb has disappeared.
Millions of gallons of water vanished into a sinkhole at the bottom of the 23-acre lake during just a few days this week.
Water in the man-made lake began draining rapidly last weekend. By midweek, the lake was gone, leaving behind a big, muddy indentation with a 50-foot crack.
A geologist inspected the lake bed and said water built up from recent thunderstorms likely caused the sinkhole. Water flowed underground to an aboveground spring four miles away, he said.
