05/25/2004: Score two for the Gateway City....
According to a recent Zagat Survey, St. Louis scores big when it comes to tourist attractions. Among the surprises, a small, interactive children's museum in Kirkwood (a west St. Louis suburb) leads the list of best children's attractions, beating out even Disneyland and Disney's Magic Kingdom, while the St. Louis Zoo beats out even the powerhouse San Diego Zoo as being the U.S.'s best zoo. Grant's Farm (part of the palatial Busch family estate), while not topping out any lists, garnered a good ranking among the best U.S. attractions as well.
I've always been fond of the Magic House (where I used to take my daughter when she was smaller), but I find it a bit hard to believe that it would beat out the crown jewels of the Disney empire (on the other hand, I can see where long lines for attractions, large crowds, and other factors relating to the sheer magnitude of the Disney enterprises might work to Disney's disadvantage). The high ranking of the St. Louis Zoo doesn't surprise me at all; granted that Joan Embry's frequent appearances on The Tonight Show tended to raise public awareness of the San Diego Zoo, it's always been clear that the St. Louis Zoo is a world class institution.
I wonder (he asks idly), where Graceland ranked, if at all, in the lists?
