05/21/2004: Excellent news for the Cardinals this weekend....
This weekend being Yet Another Cards-Cubs Series--this one in The Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field. I'll let the Post-Dispatch explain it all for you:
With the Chicago Cubs' decision to place righthander Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his pitching arm, the Cardinals will not have to face Wood, Carlos Zambrano, Greg Maddux or the rehabilitating Mark Prior in their three-game weekend series that starts this afternoon in Chicago.Though to hear Tony LaRussa tell it, there's still plenty of room for concern:
"That's pretty scary," said La Russa of the Cubs' projected rotation of righthanded rookie Sergio Mitre, journeyman lefthander Glendon Rusch and more than capable righthander Matt Clement. "It's strange enough to where those guys who are pitching ... they'll be ready. They'll have that underdog mentality."More good news for the Cardinals: in addition to Wood, Sammy Sosa is also on the DL (bad back).
La Russa also is concerned that Rusch, who has been batted around the last couple of seasons, is notably effective against a couple of Cardinals hitters. Both hot-hitting third baseman Scott Rolen and second baseman Tony Womack are three for 17 against the lefthander.
And good news for me: it looks like all three games are going to be televised in Memphis this weekend.
Sometimes everything just comes together.
