05/19/2004: I don't want to go out on a limb here....
but to judge from the box score available via Minor League Baseball website's Tennessee Smokies page (follow the links), Brad Thompson went 5 scoreless innings tonight before being tapped by the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx for one run in the top of the 6th. By my calculations, that brings him to 57 scoreless innings, which handily beats the previous minor league record of 56 scoreless innings. I'll be anxiously awaiting the confirmation in the media, probably tomorrow morning.
UPDATE: No need to wait til tomorrow. The Cardinal Nation confirms that Brad Thompson holds the all time minor league record for scoreless innings pitched: 57 2/3 innings.
So near and yet so far: I think I read that the all time record in professional baseball (all levels) is held by Orel Hershiser, at 58 scoreless innings. *sigh*
UPDATE #2: Brian Walton, at The Cardinals Birdhouse corrects me here: Orel's scoreless innings record is 59 innings, not 58. Brad missed it by 4 outs.
Oh well, still a magnificent job. Congratulations Brad! (I know, like he really reads this blog. Oh who knows; he may stumble across it if he does any egosurfing. Stranger things have happened.)
