05/14/2004: Meanwhile, I'm feeling like an uebergeek today....
Wednesday I bought a home/office APC Back-UPS ES 725 home/small office uninterruptible power source (it was on sale at the local Office Depot). Of course, they provide the control software for Winblows (and Mac, both OS X and OS 9, IIRC), but not Linux. However, I managed to install and configure apcupsd for Linux, and it does shut down the desktop box when I've booted it into Linux and then pull the plug on the UPS.
I'd have the right to feel like a übergeek if I had downloaded the source from someplace like SourceForge and then compiled it myself; instead I wussed out and installed it from the Mandrake Linux DVD (it was one of the programs that comes with Mandrake). Still, it was a bit more work than just installing the Windows control software, so it felt good to do it successfully.
