Dark Bilious Vapors

to Chris Lawrence, Mississippi half of the blogging tag team of Signifying Nothing ("Where Mississippi Meets Memphis Halfway"). A while ago he finished the Ph.D. in Political Science at Ole Miss, and had been billing himself on the blog as "an unemployed political scientist". That changed yesterday as Chris got an offer from an institution known only as "BCITS" (which stands for "the best college in [the state]"); now Chris is billing himself as a "soon to be employed political scientist".

If I'm interpreting the relevant blog entry correctly, BCITS is located in "a state capital within a leisurely drive of Memphis, Tenn.", which has got me figuring. By my definition of "leisurely drive", the qualifying capitals would be Little Rock, AR (two hours or so), Nashville, TN (about three hours), and Jackson, MS (about three hours). Actually, none of these really qualifies by my definition of "leisurely drive", but those are the closest state capitals, and Frankfort, KY, Baton Rouge, LA and Jefferson City, MO (the three next nearest capitals that I can think of visualizing a map in my head; I'm too lazy to actually look it up right now) are definitely not leisurely drives from Memphis. So I'm betting the offer's from a college in the Little Rock area, but I'm sure Chris will tell us himself when he's ready.

Update (5/11/04): Chris has apparently accepted the offer; the front page of "Signifying Nothing" now lists him as visiting assistant professor of Political Science at Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi. So I'd have lost that bet....
